Requiem for a Goofball

Jo Jo, our rat terrier, passed away this evening. This wasn't unexpected. Jo Jo had been sick off and on since puppyhood, had some eye problems, and only one functioning kidney. We had to give her pills every day, but eventually, these didn't work so well. So, we made her comfortable and loved her gently until nature took its course. Thankfully, she was spry and fat and happy until she simply wasn't, and in a matter of days, declined and died quietly in her sleep, under her favorite blankets, in her favorite bed.

Owning and parenting a terrier was certainly a challenge for us. Not sure it's a challenge we'll accept again, but I promise you--we will NEVER forget this puppy. She was one of a kind, and lives in the pet hall of fame in our heart.

We did what many farm folks do, in that we answered death with life. Today, we acquired an unusual oaten peacock who has been named Caesar, and two turkey poults, christened Romulus and Remus for now. Pictures will be forthcoming.

So, with some sadness and some joy, I present my current pet total:

Current Pet Total:
Dogs: 3
Cats: 7
Turkeys: 2
Guineas: 4
Peafowl: 7
Chickens: 37

I'm so sorry to hear about Jo Jo. He looks like a great dog. I'm sure you have lots of great memories of his time with you.

I'm SO sorry to hear about your beloved JoJo, Susan! It sounds like she was a wonderful addition to your family and you gave her so much love and affection while she was here. It's so very sad to lose a 'member' of the family. :( We have a 14 year old named Sammy that we all just adore. She's been with us since she was 5 weeks old (and I was three months pregnant with our first child)so she has literally grown up right along both of our children. She follows me around the house all day (while they are at school), sitting right beside me in my recliner as I work diligently (and absentmindedly give her soft coat a loving stroke every now and again. ;) But the minute the kids get home, she's all theirs-sitting at our 13 year old's feet and sleeping under the covers with our 7 year old son every single night. (when he sleeps over at a friend's, she is quite lost!) Anyway, you losing JoJo reminds me of the sadness that I know we will all feel when Sammy's time to leave us comes. (And I'm afraid her time might be creeping near. :( Best of luck with your farm and all of your beloved animals! (we live in town, but still have 2 guinea pigs, a lop, and a hamster. (we had two up until a couple of weeks ago when Rose, our daughter's hamster of 4 years, passed away.) If only we lived on a farm again, we'd have many more pets, I'm sure! (It's awful sad when a pet dies, but they give so much love when they're among us that I think most of us just wouldn't trade the experience for anything!)
